Although there are no rail services to Tyrone, Ulsterbus provide limited daily services from Belfast and surrounding counties. Take the N2 from Dublin to reach Tyrone.

Bus
Ulsterbus provide limited daily services to County Tyrone from Belfast and surrounding counties.

Rail
The Dublin / Cork and Dublin / Limerick lines serve North Tipperary with stations at Templemore and Thurles, Roscrea, Cloughjordan, Nenagh and Birdhill. The other towns of Tipperary, Cahir, Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir are served by the Waterford / Limerick line.

Sea
The Sea Cat provides the fastest crossing to Northern Ireland from Stranrear in Scotland to Belfast, sailing 5 times a day and taking 90 minutes. A Liverpool to Belfast service runs every second day with Norse Irish Ferries. Stena Sealink and P&O Ferries operate ferries to Larne from Stranrear and Cairnryan, taking up to 140 minutes and sailing 10 to 15 times daily.

 RURAL

Sperrin Mountains
The Sperrins are situated in the northeast of county Tyrone with the highest peak reaching 2240ft at Sawel. This wild mountain range is good for hiking with its miles of winding roads and is teeming with wildlife. The Sperrin Heritage Centre has information about the surrounding area and the gold and other treasures that were once found.


Gortin Glen Forest Park
The wildlife enclosure here has Sika deer and the area offers views of the Strule Valley and the Donegal Hills.


Forests
There are twelve forests in the Sperrin Mountains : Gortin Glen, Glenshane, Drum Manor, Davagh, Killeter, Altnaheglish, Moydamlaght, Goles, Learmount, Sawel, Seskinore and Baronscourt


The Ulster Way
In Tyrone the Ulster Way passes through the Sperrin Mountains and offers fine hiking opportunities. A good base for hiking is the village of Gortin.


Parkanur Forest
Grazing deer can be viewed throughout this forest park.

 COASTAL

Lough Neagh
Situated between the counties of Derry, Tyrone, Antrim and Armagh, Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles covering 400 sq km. Myth has it that the lake was formed when Fionn Mac Cumhaill picked up a sod of earth and threw it into the Irish Sea, forming the Isle of Man.

 HISTORICAL

Beaghmore Stone Circles
This collection of Bronze Age stone circles, monuments and cairns date back to 2000BC. The site is located in the foothills of the Sperrins near Cookstown. The positions of the vast array of stones are connected to the actions of the sun, moon and stars.


Ardboe Cross
A 10th century Christian High Cross with panels depicting the Old Testament.


Newtownstewart Castle
Situated upon a hill just outside Newtownstewart, this 14th century castle was once an O’Neill clan bastion.


Todd’s Cairn and Druid’s Altar
Located just outside Castlederg are these megalithic tombs. The Druid’s Altar tomb includes stone panels with ogham carvings.

 URBAN

Omagh
The county town is located on a hill and is a popular base for hiking and fishing. It has an interesting twin-spired Catholic Church and a Classical Courthouse.


Strabane
This border town is situated along the River Foyle. The National Trust Georgian property of Gray’s printing shop harks back to Strabane’s past as a printing hub.


Cookstown
Named after its founder Alan Cook, Cookstown is noted for its 130ft wide central thoroughfare. It is a picturesque town set against the backdrop of the Sperrins.


Dungannon
Dungannon was the location for the seat of government of the famous O’Neill clan. The homestead of Ulysses Simpson Grant, 18th U.S. President, is located in the town.


Sion Mills
This unique village is a heritage area. The features of its linen industry are perfectly preserved, with the mill encircled by tiny cottages used by the mill workers.


Castlederg
Situated on the River Derg, this town is often a resting place for people on their way to or from Lough Derg’s St. Patrick’s Purgatory. It contains the ruins of a 17th century plantation castle.
