TRAVEL INFORMATION
Travel along the N1 from Dublin or the A1 from Belfast to reach county Armagh. Portadown is on the main railway line from Belfast to Dublin with daily services and Ulsterbus provide regular services to Armagh city and the county towns.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Armagh is known as Ireland’s “Apple Blossom” county and has some attractive countryside, most notably around Slieve Gullion. The county is closely associated with St. Patrick as he built his first cathedral in the Armagh City.

Ulsterbus provide daily services to Armagh city and the county towns from Belfast and surrounding counties.

Rail
N.I. Railways serve Lurgan and Portadown from Belfast’s Great Victoria St. station, 12 times daily. Portadown is also on the main line from Belfast to Dublin with daily services.

Sea
The Sea Cat provides the fastest crossing to Northern Ireland from Stranrear in Scotland to Belfast, sailing 5 times a day and taking 90 minutes. A Liverpool to Belfast service runs every second day with Norse Irish Ferries. Stena Sealink and P&O Ferries operate ferries to Larne from Stranrear and Cairnryan, taking up to 140 minutes and sailing 10 to 15 times daily.

Airports
Belfast International Airport is located 30 km from the city centre.There are hourly flights to Belfast from London, with some regional British cities also being served. There is a daily KLM flight from Amsterdam and an American Trans Air flight from New York once a week.01 849 422888

Slieve Gullion
Surrounded by a circle of small hills named Gullion Ring Dyke, this mountain is closely associated with the legends of Cuchulainn and Fionn MacCumhaill. The Slieve Gullion area offers amazing views.


Gosford Forest Park
Located in the grounds of Gosford Castle is this deer park and bird sanctuary.


Peatlands Park
A reserve relating the history of peat in the area.

This garden set in 1.5 acres has a selection of herbaceous alpines, fruit, vegetables, flowers and shrubs.

 COASTAL

Lough Neagh
Situated between the counties of Derry, Tyrone, Antrim and Armagh, Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles covering 400 sq km. Myth has it that the lake was formed when Fionn Mac Cumhaill picked up a sod of earth and threw it into the Irish Sea, forming the Isle of Man. The 75 miles of shore are marshy and wooded.

Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, Craigavon.
Situated within the spectacular Oxford Island Nature Reserve, this centre tells the story of Lough Neagh’s history and wildlife.

River Bann
The Bann offers good coarse angling.

Angling
Angling is popular on Seagahan Reservoir, Keady Lake and Craigavon’s Balancing Lakes.

 HISTORICAL

Navan Fort
The seat of the Kings of Ulster and the Red Branch Knights, the earthworks of Navan Fort are situated two miles from Armagh City. The Navan Centre below has exhibitions covering the myths and legends of the site.


St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral
St.Patrick's huge twin-spired, Neo-Gothic Cathedral is located in Armagh City and has colourful mosaics. The ruins of a Franciscan friary dating from 1263 are also found in the city.


Pillar Stone of Kilnasaggart
This 700 A.D. Christian monument, with intricate carvings is located near Jonesborough and is surrounded by a number of small stone crosses.


Warringstown House
Located in the town of Warringstown this classical “big house” was built in the 17th century.


Ardress House
Set amid woodland, Ardress House, a 17th century manor house is noted for its ornate interior and paintings.


The Argory
This Neoclassical house has a fine interior including the original furniture from 1824.


Palace Stables Heritage Centre.
These beautifully restored Georgian stables and courtyard are situated in Armagh city. Also in the grounds are a Franciscan Friary ruin and a fine 18th century Georgian building, Archbishop’s Palace.

 URBAN

Armagh City
A Georgian town, situated among seven hills, Armagh is closely associated with St. Patrick who built his first cathedral here. The town has a Planetarium, Observatory and Eartharium. It is a pleasant city full of narrow streets.


Crossmaglen
This Republican town located near the border has been the sight of several atrocities during the “troubles”. There is an army encampment in the centre of the town.


Craigavon
A relatively new town, part of a development in an area between Lurgan and Portadown, Craigavon is noted for its leisure facilities and public parks.


Portadown
Portadown is a busy shopping town located at the centre of the main road and rail routes.


Forkhill
An army encampment surveys this small Slieve Gullion village.
